Facebook Ads – Don’t Get Dinged

Over the last few months, Facebook has changed their advertising platform to allow you to do more.  Good news! You can now use ads to get more likes to your page, to promote external websites and to promote posts that you make. But be careful – Facebook is out to maximize their revenues and the way the ad process is set up helps them do so.

The added versatility in the latest version of Faceebook ads allows small businesses to get creative and use different ad formats to different ends and can be a great way to drive awareness but be careful when setting up your ads to take note of costs and ad duration (how long the ads will appear) especially with the newest promoted posts feature. If you don’t, you might end up paying more than you bargained for.

Always check the setting for promoted post ads to make sure it’s not set to run indefinitely. The default setting for campaign duration changes from page to page and day to day – we’ve seen it set for 3 days, 2 days and unlimited so far. Running continuous ads is not advised because people become desensitized and stop noticing your ad – even 3 days can be too long. You will be paying for impressions even when people aren’t noticing yours ads. So set your ads to run for a day or so at a time every week for maximum effect.

The default setting for budget is 5.00 per day which is more than sufficient especially when you are starting out (testing the waters to see what works and what doesn’t) so always remember that you can change that too.

To make changes you can click on “more options” then pick the end date for your campaign if it allows you to do so or (even better) you can go in to Adverts Manager by clicking on the button at the top right hand side of your page. It is best to run ads for a day or so at a time but no more, especially for promoted posts. And for your first campaign, start with a small budget and work up. By doing so you can find your secret sauce but not at the expense of your budget.

Facebook is now a public company and as such is even more driven to grow revenues. With their eye on the bottom line, Facebook is driven to get you to spend more. So don’t get dinged! Need help managing your Facebook ads?  Contact us now.
